WHITE HOUSE (AP) - John Bolton has a new job. President Bush today appointed him to be UN ambassador. The recess appointment dodges a Senate stalemate over his nomination. In bypassing Senate confirmation, the appointment only lasts until January 2007.

Bush says the position is "too important to leave vacant any longer."
He says Bolton brings "tremendous wisdom and expertise" to his
new post.

Bolton has been accused of abusing subordinates and misusing
intelligence to back his conservative views. The Senate Foreign
Relations Committee sent his nomination to the floor without a recommendation to approve him. That's an unusual step.

After Bush announced the appointment at the White House, Bolton
said he will work to make the UN a "stronger, more effective
organization."

Democrats and some Republicans had questioned whether Bolton is
fit for the job, given his harsh criticisms of the UN.
