8-4-05 - The FBI today met with Mexican authorities across the border from the violence-ravaged Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo.
But officials from both countries later declined comment on details of the meeting in Laredo.
F-B-I spokesman Rene Salinas, whose San Antonio office oversees the Laredo area, called the meeting significant but not unusual.
He wouldn't say whether it pertained to Nuevo Laredo.
Nuevo Laredo has been torn by violence that authorities blame on battles between Mexico's two most powerful drug gangs to control smuggling routes.
In June, the city's police chief was killed hours after taking office. Police then opened fire on federal agents sent in to restore order, forcing President Vicente Fox's government to purge a portion of the local police force.
