8-24-05 - Republican Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday named attorney Don Willett, who played a key role in helping President Bush set up his faith-based government programs, to the Texas Supreme Court.
Willett most recently has been an adviser to Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
Previously he served as domestic policy and special projects adviser for the Bush-Cheney 2000 presidential campaign. He went on to establish the White House Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives.
He has been appointed to fill the vacancy left on the nine-member court in June when Priscilla Owen moved to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans following a drawn-out confirmation battle in Washington.
The Texas Supreme Court is the state's highest civil court. All seats are currently held by Republicans.
