9-1-05 - At least one shelter has been overwhelmed with food and donations for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center in Longview is full of food and other donations, and Longview Major Jay Dean said East Texans should stop giving, at least for now.
"We are currently being overwhelmed with food, and the outpouring from the community is unprecedented," Dean said at a news conference Wednesday. "But we need to take a step back and let the Red Cross put their system into action."
Dean said residents need to give the American Red Cross some time to determine exactly what supplies are needed.
"The Red Cross is a well-trained and proven organization," Dean said in Thursday's editions of the Longview News-Journal. "We need to give them 12 to 24 hours to activate their plan so we can advise the community of what the needs really are. We need to spread this generosity out because people could be here for several months."
