9-12-05 - Opponents of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps distributed more than 1,800 white ribbons symbolizing prayer and dialogue instead of fear and division, according to the campaign organizers.
Organizer Elizabeth Garcia distributed the ribbons during three masses Sunday at the San Felipe de Jesus church in Cameron Park.
"Militarization without legislation cannot stop immigration," Garcia said. "We need to advocate for immigration reform."
The Minuteman group has said it will arrive in the Rio Grande Valley later this month with about 50 volunteers to monitor the border for illegal activity.
"The Valley is a complicated place, and simple solutions aren't going to work," the Rev. Michael Seifert said.
Minuteman representatives did not return calls seeking comment late Sunday.
