9-14-05 - The McAlester City Council has voted 4-to-3 to allow non-uniformed city employees to form a union.

Union organizer John Kirby with the Communication Workers of America says nearly 80 percent of the city's workers have signed a petition asking for union representation.

City employee Jeremy Johnson says the workers need the union for job protection.

City officials say layoffs are possible because the city's payroll account is overdrawn.
