10-4-05 - Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry was the keynote speaker at the D.A.R.E. rodeo at the Choctaw Coliseum in Durant on Tuesday. Six thousand children from grades 4, 5, and 6 were bused in from the 10 1/2 counties of southeastern Oklahoma.
D.A.R.E. is an acronym for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Uniformed law officers will greet children as they depart their bus and give each one a sheriff’s badge sticker.
This is the second D.A.R.E. rodeo sponsored by the tribe. After hearing words of encouragement from Governor Henry, the students will see performances in bull riding, barrel racing, Roman riding and a Brahma bull act.
“The Choctaw Nation is proud to be able to voice the important message of saying no to drugs,” said Chief Gregory E. Pyle. “It is very exciting to expect such a large group of students.
“It is a rare opportunity to speak to more than 6,000 people on ways to fight drug abuse," Pyle said. "I am thankful that Governor Henry has agreed to participate in the program. His leadership in this effort is greatly appreciated.”
