SHERMAN, Tex. -- A routine traffic stop on U.S. 75 in Sherman ended with a car in flames and shut down southbound lanes Friday afternoon.

An officer pulled the car over for a traffic stop just after three o’clock Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 75 between FM 691 and Loy Lake Road. The driver pulled over into the left inside median near some tall grass. Fire officials believe the car's catalytic converter caught the grass on fire and then quickly spread to the car.

Police were forced to shut down southbound U.S. 75 for a time Friday afternoon.

No one was injured in the fire.

Advisory: We have not received word that the lanes have reopened. Drivers may want to use an alternate route at this time.

The idiot that I saw was the man in the white car going the wrong way on the service road to get back to 691. Dumb as*. Michelle...most eldery people drive alot better than some younger drivers, some of them just don't need to be on the road!

This "goofball" driving the car was probably someone elderly. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Some of them just don't need to be on the road! And as many have stated, an officer doesn't decide which side they pull off on!

1 less idiot on highway 75...that's a good start.

why would the cop feel like a goof ball. the person in the other car should feel like an idiot. and why would anyone pay for that persons car?

I got caught in the traffic caused by this and it was funny to watch everyone drive through the grass to get on the service road to avoid waiting. A lot of new 'makeshift' ramps were made today. Some people were even exiting the highway via an onramp. All just to save 5 minutes...

I bet he/she did it just to burn the evidence. Did anyone driving by get high? Get out the marshmallows.

The cop feels like a goof ball? He eventually drove his car away from the scene...the goof ball didn't.

the cop tried to get the driver to move to the correct side of the road. the driver, instead, pulled further into the grass.

I guess this will serve as a lesson for everyone that you should never drive over tall dead grass with a hot car. Too bad the driver had never been told of this hazard. The police don't decide which side a driver will pull off on. Most people know to always pull off the right side of the road--never the left. I am glad no one was injured.

now both of yall are idoits, how can the officer control where a person pulls off the road at. if the driver of the car would of pulled off on the right side of the road where the shoulder is they probably would still have a car. Yall are idoits.........

last time I checked you are to stop on the right shoulder of the highway not the center median, it is not the officer fault that the vehicle caught on fire, the violator was violating a Texas Traffic Law and that is the reason it was stopped, something happens with the police and automatic the officer is always at fault

How about: shouldn't the driver have pulled onto the right shoulder? That would have been the responsible move, right? Why would you want to put yourself or the officer in more danger by stopping by the fast lane? Why does everyone always blame the cops?

Yes, the cops expect them to pull over to the paved shoulder on the right, but if a dumb a** driver pulls over to the wrong side of the road and stops, what's the cop supposed to do?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 18, 2008 at 06:17 PM
Now whos going to take the blame for the grass not being cut and whos going to pay for the burnt car ? ?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: sherman on Jul 18, 2008 at 05:50 PM
should the police officer pulled the car off on the opposite side??

lol bet the cop feels like a goof ball
