ARDMORE, OK -- A shocking new report shows many veterans don't have a home to call their own. The New York Times reports almost a third of our American Veterans are homeless, and we're learning that report hits close to home in Texoma. Shelby Levins reports.

The New York Times report may surprise you. The paper estimates 131,000 veterans across the U.S. are homeless every night. Some actually sleeping on the streets, others finding shelter wherever they can.

Danny Rusk works at the Salvation Army Thrift store. The Marine, 58, is working to get himself back on his feet.

"I think it was really what you'd call a good life, from there to a dumpster; it happened so fast it's really hard to explain,” Rusk told us.

But Rusk is hardly the Texoma veteran to lose his footing. Craig Williams served overseas with the Air Force, but found himself homeless when we returned back to the states

"I've slept in my car and I've slept in people's drive ways,” Williams explained.

Both men are living at the Salvation Army's Men's Shelter, and according to The New York Times, they're just two of thousands of veterans who are homeless. In fact, the news organization reports almost a third of all adult homeless men in the US are veterans.

Captain Ernest Hull the Corps Officer says out of the ten men living in the Ardmore shelter, three are veterans.

"It's real saddening to realize our vets are coming back and dealing with some stress that you and I just don't imagine,” Capt. Hull said.

Both Williams and Rusk remain humble, saying they're the ones thankful they were able to serve our county and are honored to be veterans.

"To have the freedom that we have because of men and women like myself and those that are serving now, I get goose bumps just thinking about it,” Williams said.

While neither man blames his current situation on the military, they question if maybe veterans need more help transitioning back to civilian life.

"I find it a little bit disturbing. It's like there something missing that should be in place for our veterans,” Rusk said.

The Times reports millions of government dollars are being poured into things like a new G.I. Bill to benefit our service members. The hopes are to keep men like Rusk and Williams who fought for our county, from battling at home just to survive.

"I know I'm going to be OK. I'm still a Marine,” Rusk said.
