BONHAM, TX-Several housing units in Bonham have been demolished by the Texoma Council of Governments after years of disrepair and residents said it's about time.
"I'm kinda glad they're taking them down, I really am. I mean people are trying to live over there still and they're not supposed to be."
Russell Massey lives just two homes away from one of the units being demolished and said people have been breaking into them, posing a safety issue.
"Some of them who used to live here tried to get in them because sometimes the doors are unlocked so it's easy for them to get in there and get hurt," he said.
"They've been in disrepair for a number of years and we have just received federal approval to demolish those and we now have the capital funding available to complete the project."
Texoma Council of Governments, Allison Minton, said they have just received $100,000 from the federal government to go ahead with the demolition. She said all six buildings, with a total of 12 units, were built in the 1950's and the foundations are giving out causing the interiors to crumble and walls pulling away from the base boards.
"Because of the movement and the shifting of the soil, it pulled the two pores away from one another and it created severe foundation deficiencies that couldn't be repaired," she said.
Minton said the demolition project will be finished by the end of this month.
