Carter County residents apply for safe room rebate program

ARDMORE, OK - The threat of severe weather Tuesday had much of Texoma thinking about safety measures, including Carter County residents who had the chance to apply for a safe room grant.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ardmore Public Library, residents filled out applications for grant money provided by the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Those chosen can get a maximum rebate of 75 percent, once they install the storm shelter. Rebates do not exceed $2,000.

Emergency officials said the entire process could take six months to a year. "They do have to pay for the safe room in full and then they get reimbursed the money," Ardmore Emergency Management Coordinator Amber Wilson said. "On average, it usually costs people $500 to $800 out of their own pocket."

Carter County Emergency Management said they have now reached their limit for grant applications.

Residents in Love County who want to apply for the safe room rebate program can do so Wednesday and Thursday. Meetings will be held at 7 p.m. at the REA Community Room in Marietta.
