BONHAM, TX - A historic building in downtown Bonham collapsed overnight.

City officials say around 10 p.m. Thursday, Bonham Police and Fire Departments responded to the building on East Fifth Street just north of the courthouse. No one was inside or near the building when it happened. It is unknown what caused the building to collapse. It was occupied by a barber shop.

City manager Bill Shipp says the building is well over 100 years old. He says the the Dollar General next door will be closed until they can determine if the area is safe.

"We don't know what caused it at this point in time. I mean, there was nothing, no explosion or anything like that. Probably simply the winds. But we'll get somebody out, get a structural engineer out first thing in the morning to determine what caused it and what impact it has on the adjacent buildings as well," Shipp said.

Shipp says that section of East Fifth Street will remained blocked off.
