AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Temperatures are topping out at 100 degrees for the first time this year and the grid operator for most of Texas is urging people to conserve energy.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas says on Tuesday the electric use during the 4 to 5 p.m hour reached over 66,000 megawatts.
The previous record, which was set Monday, measured at just over 65,000 megawatts. During peak demand one megawatt is enough to power about 200 homes.
The company says to reduce demand on the grid you can turn your thermostat up by a few degrees, set pool pumps to run late at night or early in the morning and avoid using large appliances.
