Family of Healdton West Nile victim warns dangers of virus

HEALDTON, OK -The family of a Healdton man who died last week from the West Nile Virus speaks out asking everyone to protect themselves from mosquitoes. Sara Humphrey brings us the victim's story through the eyes of his son.

Mike Brady said his dad Bill Brady was someone who usually didn't sweat the small stuff.

"He was just enjoying life," Mike said. "Didn't think he had a problem in the world."

So when the 77-year-old avid outdoorsman got bit by a mosquito he didn't think too much of it.

"He actually came in that Thursday evening and complained of a fever and pain right behind his eyes," Mike said.

Mike said for weeks doctors in Ardmore and Oklahoma City tried to figure out what was wrong with his father.

"That's one of the most frustrating things about West Nile Virus is even when we got to the hospital they had no idea," Mike said.

Finally test results revealed Bill had West Nile Virus.

"The doctors come to you and say there's no treatment or anything his body has to fight it himself," Mike said. "All we can do is follow the symptoms and treat the symptoms as they arrive. Unfortunately for dad, his symptoms were too severe and it ended up costing him his life."

Mike said it was important to him and his family to share their story. He said his dad would want everyone to know how serious the virus can be.

Mike said there are a thousand memories he would like to share about Bill.

"He was a very patriotic person," Mike said. "The fourth of July was his favorite holiday."

Although Bill isn't physically here today, his traditions will live on.

"For all of us, that is one thing we will never give up, is that fourth of July celebration," Mike said. "It was so important to us and we are going to carry on that tradition."

Bill Brady is the fourth confirmed West Nile death so far this year in Oklahoma.

His funeral is set for Monday at 2 p.m. at the Crystal Rock Cathedral in Ardmore.
