GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Veterinarians in Texoma say they have seen twice as many pets die from the heat this summer than in years past. The Grayson County Animal Emergency Clinic says almost every day they see a pet die from the heat. Veterinarians are stressing the importance of taking simple steps to avoid the tragedy of losing your pet.
Eric Williams says he isaware of the heat and the affect it could have on his dog. That is why he always walks him in the early morning or evening when it is not quite as hot outside.
"I feel for the dog. I wouldn't want to be hot. So I'm sure he doesn't want to be hot," Williams said.
Williams says the most important thing he carries around to keep his furry friend cool is water.
Those are exactly some of the tips Veterinarian David Tidwell suggests. but he also has some other advice.
"Make sure that they're pet has adequate shade, has fans, even set up a mister," Dr. Tidwell said.
Dr. Tidwell says if you keep your animals outdoors it is wise to keep a shallow pool, but he says do not forget to refresh the pool water frequently and keep the water bowls filled up.
However, veterinarians say it is always best to keep your pet inside and have the thermostat set no higher than 78 degrees.
"It doesn't take but just minutes for them to get hot enough to have a heat stroke and to have a fatal event," Dr. Tidwell said.
Dr. Tidwell says if you do find your pet is unresponsive or is sick because of the heat you need to act fast because they could be saved.
"First thing you need to do is just get them in. You don't want to put cold water on them, but get some lukewarm water on them start cooling them down. You can obviously call your veterinarian immediately and get them in so that we can check them," Dr. Williams said.
Vets also say to never keep your pet alone in your vehicle.
Another tip is when bathing your dog with a water hose wait for the water to cool off to avoid your pet from getting burns.
