SHERMAN, TX- In a car accident, police warn that danger not only lies outside your vehicle but also inside. Victoria Maranan tells us how everyday objects can become deadly in a crash.
Rebekah Miller said, with three kids, she's always on the go and there are always toys and other items in her car.
"You don't have a choice. With kids you gotta haul a lot of stuff, it's practically like moving every time you walk out the door," she said.
But Sherman police Lt. Ken Brooks said having many objects in your car, no matter how big or how heavy, is a potential hazard if you get into an accident or make a sudden stop.
"The faster the speed, the more severe the accident. The more severe the accident, the greater the probability that someone will get hurt as a result of something flying around in a car," he said.
"We try not to have anything big and heavy in front of the backseat. We try to carry all that in the back, so I am cautious about that. But sometimes it's unavoidable and you just have to do the best you can," said Miller.
If you're driving 35 miles per hour and had to stop abruptly, a one pound object like a water bottle can easily turn into a 35 pound projectile.
"The vehicle stops, but whatever your item is that was sitting in the car continues on at 35 mph until it hits something. And so, it becomes basically a projectile that's subject to injure you or someone else in the car," said Brooks.
That's why Brooks said it's best to keep objects off the seats and the dashboard.
"The smartest thing to do is keep it as low as possible. In other words, if you're gonna carry it in the passenger compartment truck, keep it in the floor. And even that is not a guarantee that it's not gonna hurt you but it lowers the probability that it will," he said.
"I try to keep everything that I haul in the back down low, behind the backseat so it's not flying around," said Miller.
