BOSWELL, OK - Prison officials say an inmate who escaped custody last night has been apprehended by prison staff in Boswell.

Jerry Johnson at the Howard McLeod Correctional Facility in Atoka tells us 25-year-old David Ray Smith was missing at the midnight inmate count last night. He says an escape team from the prison caught Smith in Boswell around noon today.

Smith was serving a six year sentence for cruelty to animals and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Johnson says he will now face additional jail time, possibly several more years added to his sentence.

I'm glad he was returned to the correction facility-he has a mental illness and is not given his medication because nobody wants to pay for it or get him the proper help because he is poor with no insurance-so when he doesn't get his medication he acts out and they put him in jail. You would think that in a country with as much money as we have (In America) we could do a better job of taking care of people who can't take care of themselves. I pray they do the best they can to help him because I love him very much and I wish I could help him-I don't know how to without money I am welcome to positive suggestions

they are in the process of putting a fence around the perimeters for just exactly that reason, prisoners just walk away from the facility and if they know the landscape they don't even have to stick to the highway to get to hwy 3 at centerpoint

At the prison farm north of Boswell all they have to do is walk off. There is no fence keeping them in. So people that have a problem with that like myself need to talk to our Representative. Something needs to be done before one day someone escapes from there and hurts anyone. If the city council isn't hiring a police officer just yet, then the county officers need to earn their pay a little more and come to Boswell to patrol. We are still in Choctaw County and we do vote for Sheriffs and what not.

The "escape team" captured him? Maybe the prison needs a "don't let them escape in the first place" team!
