MADILL,OK--A few months ago a mobile home manufacturing company in Marshall County announced it would be laying off more than a hundred employees this Monday. Now one group stepped in to help those employees and so many others.
Thanks to the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce dozens of Solitaire Homes employees may not be jobless after Monday's layoff. To help out fellow community members...The Chamber hosted its first job fair this morning.
"I think it says a lot about our county that they would get so involved and see a problem an jump right in there and make a difference and they really are" said Maple.
Karen Maple came to the job fair for a different reason, she runs a mobile home community and wanted to be there for some of her residents who work at Solitaire Homes that will soon be laid off.
"So I've came down with a few of them just for moral support" said Maple.
More than 300 job seekers from across southern Oklahoma showed up to the job fair at the William Ray Park Community building along with over 20 area Businesses from Durant all the way to Ardmore.
"Dot foods, Michelin, Red River Ford, Service Master from here in Madill" said Brennan.
Organizers said putting on the job fair was the least they could do.
"The impact that it could have on the county but also the impact it would have on those 120 people their families their livelihood so the answer to the question is what do we do and job fair that's what we decided to do" said Brennan.
"Special thank you to our chamber of commerce because like I said without them jumping forward like they did a lot more people would have a lot more problems" said Maple.
Steven Lareau who was hired on the spot agrees.
"I take a welding test and get drug screened and all that Monday morning" said Lareau.
The job fair was put on with the help of the Southern Oklahoma workforce. The Marshall chamber of commerce is planning on making the job fair an annual event .
