ARDMORE, OK - In Oklahoma there are approximately 39,000 children that suffer from a serious mental illness.
In honor of National Children's Mental Health Day, Systems of Care & Mental Health hosted a Heroes of Hope event in Ardmore to raise awareness on the importance of giving children the help and services they need so to overcome mental health.
Officials said providing services can reduce the risk of substance abuse, incarceration and will allow more kids to graduate from high school.
"The earlier we start an intervention the earlier we can mange their behavior and understand to give them the opportunity of resilience in hopes they can move forward," Behavioral Case Manager Evelyn Southers said.
Wednesday's events included dancing, games and a guest speaker.
