ARDMORE, OK - A dog owner said two pit bulls attacked her pet, and it is not the only time police dealt with a dangerous dog the same day.

Peggy Jones came home two weeks ago to find her daughter screaming about their dog Xena, 3.

"I jumped out of the car and came around and saw that it was two pit bulls pulling her from one end to the other," Jones said. "I tried throwing sticks and rocks and bricks at the dogs but we couldn't stop them."

A neighbor threw a huge piece of wood and scared the dogs away.

Veterinarian Doug Aldridge had to act fast to patch up the dog's neck, and said it is amazing that she survived. "The wound was right by the jugular vein, but did not tear it," Aldridge said. "It was torn all around it."

Also on Jan. 23, police shot and killed a different pit bull that had gotten loose on 3rd Avenue NW. Neighbors said they are familiar with that dog, because they said it previously attacked a woman walking by.

"It just kept jumping on her and jumping at her and trying to intimidate her," Jacob Benner said.

According to Ardmore police, special measures are required for dogs that tend to be aggressive. "The animal has to be in an enclosure with a lid like a kennel or chained to a certain-sized concrete slab and also to a fence," police spokesman Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt said.

Dog owner Chad Caroll keeps his dogs behind a fence, but they have managed to get out or another dog to get in. "My boxer has gotten into a fight with a few pit bulls," Carroll said.

A pit bull owner we spoke with said it is all in how you raise the dog. "I have been raising them all my life," Tommy Lee said. "I just the love the way they look and are built and how they are obedient."

"It's just that if they do get a hold of something they're so strong that what ever they get a hold of is going to probably be torn up," Aldridge said of pit bulls.

Jones is just glad no children were hurt when her dog was attacked. "It could have just as easily been a child instead of my puppy," Jones said.

Aldridge said the dog had to be given shots of pain medicine for almost a week before she could go home. Police ticketed the owner of the two pit bulls.
