ANTLERS, OK - A man is still in critical condition hours after a pursuit ended in gunfire on a highway in Pushmataha County.

Investigators stayed at the scene of the shooting for six hours in Antlers. Wednesday night, the suspect was still at a Tulsa hospital. His name was not released, it's unknown if he's local.

Katrina Morgan was on her way to work Wednesday when she saw a pursuit in front of the EZ Go and McDonald's at the Indian Nation Turnpike in Antlers.

"I was standing in front of the window right there and I looked over because I saw a white car coming a little close to the building so I looked out and I've seen a cop hit him in the back," she said.

What happened next caught her by surprise.

"At first I was like 'what the heck?' When I saw the car coming through the building and when I saw the gun was fired, I got a little upset," she said.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Hampton sad the gunshots ended the chase that started when a driver sped off on Highway 3 then headed north on the turnpike around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.

"We're given a call of a stolen vehicle in the area. The troopers located that car inside the city limits of Antlers. A pursuit ensued and the troopers pursued them up to this point," he said.

Hampton said the pursuit only lasted a few minutes and as they were able to box the suspect in, gunshots were exchanged.

"At the end of one of those TVI's, which was successful, shots were fired by one of our personnel, one of our troopers and the suspect was hit by gunfire and sent to a Tulsa hospital," he said.

Hampton said the man pointed a rifle at the trooper, so the trooper shot in self-defense hitting the man in the head and hand.

"As of what we know right now, there's a firearm on the subject's lap. So evidence is looking like the suspect aimed the weapon at our trooper and he discharged rounds," he said.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and OSBI are investigating the incident. Hampton said charges are pending for the suspect.
The trooper involved in the shooting was unharmed.
