Police shoot, kill suspect in Sherman stabbing that left 1 dead, another critical
SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - Sherman police officers fatally shot a man who had stabbed one relative to death and left another critically injured inside a home early Tuesday morning.
Chief Zachary Flores said officers received a frantic, disturbing call from a girl inside the home in the 1900 block of Pebblebrook Lane, stating her father had been stabbed.
When officers arrived they followed the girl’s screams to find a man, Chazz Hailey, 22, who police identified as a relative, with a knife in his hand covered in blood.
Officers pleaded with Hailey to drop the knife for nearly two minutes, but Flores said those pleas were ignored, and ultimately Hailey went back into the bathroom where the stabbings occurred to continue assaulting the victims.
Flores said at that point officers forced their way into the bathroom and found Hailey continuing towards the victims with a knife. That was when officers shot Hailey to protect the life of what turned out to be one juvenile victim at the time.
“There was an adult male victim who officer officers tried to perform lifesaving measures on, but he ultimately died at the scene,” Flores said. “After the shooting, the officers removed the girl out of the house and began performing lifesaving measures on her.”
Police identified the man stabbed to death as 62-year-old William Patterson, Sr. Despite attempts at life saving measures by officers and EMS, Mr. Patterson was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.
Flores said the girl was taken to the hospital severely wounded with multiple stab wounds, where she is now in critical condition.
Family identified the victim as 16-year-old Precious Patterson, and confirmed she is fighting for her life at a Dallas hospital.
According to Precious’ aunt Margie, Chaz was William’s grandson, and had just moved in with Precious and William last week.
“We love Precious so much we care so much for her, that’s why she doesn’t deserve to be hurt like this,” Margie said.
Margie said Precious was stabbed 17 times.
She said she is thankful that police stepped in when they did.
“He deserves it, whatever happened to him, he deserves it, my niece and my brother in law doesn’t deserve this,” Margie said.
Neighbor Traci Wright said William was always a good person.
“He watches our house for us when we go on vacation, he mows our lawn for us, he gets our packages on our porch so they don’t get stolen and gives them to us when we get home, I mean he’s just a great guy,” Wright said.
Margie said Precious has already had multiple surgeries.
She reports as of Tuesday afternoon Precious was responsive.
The crime scene has been turned over to the Texas Rangers to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
“Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones today,” Flores said. “We know that this has affected a great number of people, and we pray for a speedy recovery for the young lady who is currently fighting for her life.”
