Local 5A teams react to delayed season
(KXII) - After months of wondering if there will be a football season, we finally have our answer. Teams in classes 1A through 4A will start the season as planned. Practice will begin on August 3rd, with most games starting August 28th.
However, teams in class 5A and 6A will have to wait until September 7th to get back on the practice field, with games set to kickoff on September 25th. The season will not be shortened, so Sherman and Denison will still play all ten games, including the 122nd battle of the Axe.
“I’m excited about it. I’m excited that we still get to play Fall Sports,” said Sherman head football coach J.D. Martinez. “Football and volleyball are going to be kicking off at the same time. I’m excited about that, I’m excited about it for our kids.”
“I think having the season is exciting enough, but then you get to play the rivalry game,” said Denison head football coach Chad Rogers. “You talk about what kids look forward to, that’s what all these kids are looking forward to.”
While delaying the season by about a month could be one of the biggest changes, one of the most notable changes will be what you see in the stadium every Friday night. Only 50% of the stadium can be filled by fans, anyone who comes into the stadium must be wearing a face covering, and they will have to be screened before gaining access. It may be different, but it doesn’t take any of the excitement away.
“I’m excited for our kids. They have really gone through a lot. All of us have,” said Martinez. “Would love to give those kids and our community some kind of normalcy. If it happens to be football on Friday night, I’m all in.”
“I’m excited for the kids mostly. We have a lot of seniors, and a lot of juniors that have been working really hard,” said Rogers. “They are excited about this season, they have been dreaming about it all their life. So now, they have the opportunity.”
