Grayson College offering healthcare training
SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - With the need or essential healthcare workers on the rise, Grayson College is offering training for several jobs this fall.
“This is really a glimmer of hope for some people who have lost their jobs, and they need a way to pivot and to move forward in this new time,” said Marlene Phillips.
Marlene Phillips is the Director of Advising and Outreach with Grayson College’s Center for Workplace Learning.
“15 percent of the industry here in Texoma land is in health care. So that equates to about 8,000 jobs,” Phillips said.
Phillips says the need for health care workers has grown, especially in the last 6 months.
“In the Nurse Aide field, there are 395 annual openings right now as data given to us from the Workforce Commission. Last year that number was 115,” Phillips said.
That’s why Grayson College is doing what they can to fill that need by offering 65 full-tuition scholarships for select health care programs.
“What we’re trying to do is by working with our partners at Workforce Solutions Texoma, Texoma Council of Government, and also through funds from the Workforce Commission, we’re trying to get these folks in, get them the training that they need and out to those jobs that are here in the Texoma land,” Phillips said.
The college will offer training for Patient Care Technician, Certified Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy Technician, and Pharmacy Technician.
“We’re moving as much content as possible online so that we can give students the greatest opportunity for safety, but at the same time meet the minimum requirements for instruction in these programs,” said Phillips.
The programs will be taught online with limited, in-person skills training.
“I am so excited about this opportunity because I know that the pandemic response has so negatively impacted so many people, and here we have this opportunity that’s very unique,” said Phillips.
The application deadline is Sunday, July 26.
Applications can be found on the Grayson College Center for Workplace Learning website. Anyone with questions is asked to call 903-463-8765 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
