Sherman ISD requiring masks, temperature checks in back to school plan
SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - Sherman ISD released its plan for a safe return to the classroom on Thursday.
“We are starting school August 17 and students will have the option to do either in-person learning or distance learning,” said Sherman ISD Director of Communications Kimberly Simpson.
Simpson says parents will have until July 29 to choose one of those options for their student to commit to for at least nine weeks. After the nine weeks are up, parents will be able to change their enrollment options.
“If they choose distance learning, the curriculum is going to be aligned with the information students will be learning in person and grades and attendance will be taken,” Simpson said.
The district will require face coverings, such as masks and face shields, for anyone who enters district buildings and buses, including those that choose in-person learning
“It’s definitely going to be a learning experience and our teachers are going to be really good with adding that to their daily routine,” Simpson said.
Simpson says class sizes will stay the same, and teachers will spread desks and students out as much as possible for social distancing purposes.
She asks parents to monitor their kids’ temperatures and to keep them home if they have a fever over 100 degrees or any symptoms of COVID-19.
“We’ll do random temperature checks, our teachers will be monitoring our students all the time,” said Simpson.
Simpson says if a student or faculty member is infected, Sherman ISD officials will conduct contact tracing and notify anyone who was exposed.
“We will remain transparent in our communications so we will send that information out to our parents and the individuals that are directly impacted will be informed,” Simpson said.
Lunch and recess times will also be modified to limit the number of students together at one time.
Parents can expect weekly emails from the district with updates.
