SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - JD Martinez is leaving the Sherman Bearcats after being named head coach and athletic director at Bridgeport High School.

Martinez led the Bearcats for five seasons and was able to get Sherman into the playoffs despite competing in one of the toughest districts in the state.

The Bearcats made the playoffs last season, and just missed the year before due to tie-breakers. Martinez led the Bearcats to the playoffs in 2017 and 2018 as well.

The Battle of the Ax will have two new coaches next year. Denison coach Chad Rogers left to become the head coach at Tioga. Brent Whitson took over in Denison. Sherman is now open.
