Community rallies together for mom with cancer
SOUTHMAYD, Texas (KXII) - A Grayson County family is struggling, after a mother was diagnosed with cancer and she’s going into surgery this week.
She’s the wife of a police officer and after hearing the news, her community immediately stepped in.
“They’ve helped the community in so many different ways, so it’s our turn to take a step up and help them in any way that we can too,” said family friend Jodi Norton.
Norton says it came as a shock to their community.
Davita Turner, a Whitesboro mother of three, found out she has thyroid cancer and is undergoing surgery on Thursday.
“I thought of my kids,” said Turner. “Because, I lost my mom when I was seventeen to cancer and I did not want to repeat that for my kids.”
She says she also worries for her husband who is an officer, with the Whitesboro Police Department.
It’s a fear her friend Norton says hits close to home.
“It’s not easy, it’s not easy,” said Norton. “Our husbands run out the door even when they’re not working and they’re willing to put it all on the line for our community. We’re not asking them for much, we’re just asking them to help someone who’s in turn given up her husband to help them. We need to help her husband, her, and her kids in return and show them love. They need love right now, and that’s what’s most important.”
Wednesday, Pop’s Place Too in Southmayd held a fundraiser for the family, with 10% of the day’s sales going straight to the Turners.
“With all the COVID stuff that went on, and now they have another crisis in their life- that’s like another nightmare,” said Southmayd Police Chief Chad McKee, who came to have lunch in support of the Turners.
“We’re lucky in this community,” Norton said. “Around here, people support our husbands and our families and it just means so much more to us at this time.”
Turner says she couldn’t be more thankful.
“I am a private person, I try to keep everything to myself,” said Turner. “And just the outreach of help, is amazing. That they would all come together, to help us.”
