Atoka baseball retires jersey of coach Dwayne Dale
ATOKA, Okla. (KXII) -Saturday was a special day for the Atoka Baseball Program. The Wampus Cats honored longtime head coach Dwayne Dale by retiring his number and naming him as the first member of the Atoka Baseball Hall of Fame.
Dale had a 40 year coaching career with two stints at Atoka, one which included a state championship in 2019. He also had stops in Caney and Tushka.
The announcement came as a complete surprise to Dale. However, seeing so many former players reminded him of what’s really important when it comes to coaching.
”It means a lot when they come back and still know that that love is there,” said coach Dale. “It means more than wins. You know you don’t do this just for wins and recognition, state tournaments. It’s about relationship that you have with those kids and you have with those parents. The relationships for me mean a lot more than winning ball games, absolutely.”
