2 dead in wrong way crash near Red River
Two people are dead after a head-on collision in Colbert Tuesday night.
It happened around 10 p.m. on U.S. Highway 69/75 near River Road just south of Colbert.
A car was going north in the southbound lane on Highway 75.
Timothy Witt was driving back from Calera headed south on Highway 75 with his wife and mother-in-law around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
"When we were coming up close near the bridge we noticed that it had actually already ran another vehicle off the road ahead of us, luckily that gave us enough time to react," Witt said.
Witt said when he saw the other vehicle had been run off of the road, he pulled into the shoulder and called 911.
Colbert Police Chief David Petersen says that the crash happened about a minute after Witt's call.
"Right after the accident, it was called in that the truck was on fire and a passerby was able to extinguish the fire," Petersen said.
Peterson identified the wrong-way driver as Ramon Flores of Cartwright and says he crashed into Plano resident Kurt Horn.
Flores and Horn were the only two involved, and both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Chief Petersen wants people to know what to do in this type of situation.
"Call it in and just try to get out of the way as much as possible, don't try to guess what the driver is going to do, or what the other vehicle is going to do, just pull off as safely as you can, Petersen said.
Peterson said a toxicology report has been ordered for both men, and both cars involved are being inspected as evidence shows neither hit the breaks before the crash.
Deputies are still investigating the cause of the crash and encourage anyone who saw it happen to contact Colbert Police.
