Juneteenth is hosted by the Neighborhood Recreation Committee of Sherman, Texas. This organization is comprised of African-American leaders who work to bring communities together and move them forward. The Juneteenth celebration is educational, uplifting, and helps bridge the gap between past, present, and the future. First established as a holiday in 1980, Juneteenth marks the day the last 200,000 slaves in Texas were freed and the actual end of slavery in the United States. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation had declared all slaves were freed in 1863, it was not until June 19th, 1865 that Texas slaves would be freed. Today it is a national holiday celebrated across the country and the world, among people of all races, nationalities and religions as a win for humanity.
