ATOKA COUNTY, Okla. (KXII) - An inmate at a minimum security prison in Atoka County has been arrested after walking away Monday evening.

Sheriff Tony Head says a rancher called Monday night saying a man he believed was an escaped inmate hanging in his pasture.

He says the man told the rancher he was an inmate but wasn't going back and ran off.

The Department of Corrections says 39-year-old James Earl Richard Smith walked away from the Howard McLeod Minimum Security Correctional Center in Atoka County around 7:50 p.m. Monday night.

Smith was located around 3 p.m. Tuesday in a rural area six miles away after an overnight search.

Officials say Smith will be returned to the facility and moved to higher security.

Smith could face additional charges.

Smith was convicted in January for armed robbery, firearm possession and escape after lawful arrest.
