Ada man found guilty in murder of Ardmore woman

A jury found Stephen Vineyard guilty in the 2014 murder of Ella Loftis.

CARTER COUNTY, Okla. (KXII) - A Carter County jury has convicted an Ada man in the 2014 murder of an Ardmore woman.

The jury took four hours to find Stephen Vineyard, 27, guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Ella Loftis, 59. The trial lasted one week.

In 2014, Loftis was found shot to death outside her Ardmore home.

Police say Vineyard was involved with local gangs and looking for Loftis' grandson when he opened fire on their home, striking her instead.

The case remained unsolved until 2018 when a witness came forward and said Vineyard became emotional and confessed after seeing a story about the murder on News 12.

Vineyard faced a count of first-degree murder and up to life in prison. The jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and recommend a sentence of 27 years.

"I know that the Loftis family is very appreciative of the verdict and sentence that they recommended," said District Attorney Craig Ladd.

Formal sentencing is scheduled for March.
