ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) Ardmore City Commission approved land for a new indoor shooting range.
In March 2018, Ardmore's city officials denied the request of Jason Smith, J and L Properties owner, to build an outdoor gun range on south Commerce street, about a half mile north of Highway 70.
Now that Smith has been approved for a conditional use permit on the land, he can begin the construction process on the new facility.
Smith said the range will have 12 lanes, a retail store, a small deli and a classroom for training and certification.
He said the range will also have noise-cancelling ability so shots are not heard outside.
Ardmore resident Scott Davis said shooting where he lives now is too noisy and looks forward to the indoor facility.
"It's just too loud to be shooting," Davis said. "Even out seven miles where I am, it still disturbs the peace."
City officials said there are currently no public gun ranges in Ardmore.
Ardmore Community Development said the next step for the range is to survey the land and submit building plans.
Smith said he hopes to begin construction in spring of 2019.
