Ardmore man arrested for DUI after running car into building, fence

ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) - Police were called to 4th Ave NW in Ardmore where a drunk driver jumped the curb and slammed into a storage building and and fence Monday night.

Homeowner Jim Yeager said he and his wife were about to go to bed around 9 p.m.

"We were actually laying there talking and all of a sudden, we heard this screech of tires and it almost sounded like an explosion," Yeager said.

Yeager said he ran out the back of his house to see an SUV that had destroyed his neighbors storage shed, torn down the fence, damaged a swimming pool and broke a natural gas line, which was spraying gas all over and making a hissing sound.

"I'm thinking 'somebody's in the car and it's still running. I got to get them out of there in case something happens with this gas line'," Yeager said.

Yeager said he got the driver out and checked to see if he was injured or in shock.

The man was not hurt but appeared to be drunk and ran off.

Ardmore firefighters were able to shut off the gas.

Capt. Keith Ingle said officers found the driver they identified as 34-year-old Chad Smith in a house down the street.

"He was under the influence of alcohol and placed under arrest for DUI and also for leaving the scene of a property damage accident," Ingle said.

Ingle said Smith faces at least two misdemeanor charges for the wreck. This incident is his first DUI offense.

"So he's really fortunate he didn't get hurt and he's fortunate he's just in jail because he could have killed himself or somebody else," Yeager said.

Yeager said the damages add up more than $3000.

"(Monday) was really about remembering our veterans and remembering those who gave their lives for our country.=," Yeager said. "Instead, getting drunk and trying to please yourself on that day is kind of ridiculous. That's not what the day is for."

Yeager said an insurance agent will come by in the next few days and he will continue to look for any hidden damage.
