Austin College basketball player killed in wreck

SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) -- An Austin College student died Friday night after a car swerved in the 2800 block of East Tuck Street in Sherman and hit a tree.

Sherman police said there were three Austin College men in a vehicle who didn't follow the curve of the road from Tuck Street turning onto Skaggs, which caused them to hit the tree.

The front passenger, Patrick Johnson, was taken to Wilson N. Jones where he was pronounced dead.

The driver and back passenger had non life-threatening injuries according Sherman police.

Police said the accident is under investigation by the Critical Accident Investigation Team.

Johnson was a junior guard on the Kangaroos basketball team. His hometown was listed as Norwood, Texas.

Austin College head basketball coach Rodney Wecker announced that in light of Johnson's death, the Austin College athletics department, and Southeastern Oklahoma State University have made the decision to cancel Monday night's exhibition game in Durant.

"I extend the condolences of the entire Austin College community to the family of Patrick Johnson and offer our thoughts and prayers to them at this time," said Austin College president Steven P. O'Day in a press release. "We are all deeply saddened by the tragic loss and will comfort and support one another on campus in this time."

Grief counselors are being made available for Austin College students.
