DENISON, Tex. (KXII) - The Battle of the Badges blood drive kicked off Tuesday in Denison.
Battle of the Badges is a competition between Sherman, Denison and Bonham fire and police departments.
The goal of each department is to bring in the most blood donors to Texoma Regional Blood Center.
When community members donate they can vote for one of the six departments.
The friendly competition helps to keep area blood banks full.
"Come and donate because you don't want to wait until too late, donate while you can because you never know when you will need it or when one of your loved ones will need the blood," said Phlebotomist Latricia Dehorney.
Donor Mary Middleton says she enjoys the competition, but knows her donation can save lives.
"I think of it as the ultimate recycling, is donating blood. And I feel committed to doing it, since I can. And so I do," said Middleton.
Phlebotomists say to eat a good meal before, come hydrated and bring a photo ID.
They say it could take in between 10 to 20 minutes, but donors will receive a t-shirt, a drink and snacks.
Next week, the Texoma Regional Blood Center van will be set up in Sherman at the Central Fire Department on Tuesday and the Grayson County Courthouse on Wednesday.
A blood drive van will be in Bonham on July 30th and 31st.
All donation events are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
