Bokchito council demotes police chief

BOKCHITO, Okla. (KXII) -- Bokchito City Council votes to demote their chief of police to patrol officer.

The vote was three to two to oust Chief James Heil over what appears to be a dispute over the way a leash law violation was handled.

Council heard from a man before they deliberated who claimed the chief threatened to put down a woman's dog after he had picked it up running loose in the city.

The chief admitted to the threat, saying the town previously had a loose dog problem and the woman had violated city ordinances by letting the dog get out.

Heil was the Bokchito chief for 19 months and has worked in Bokchito as a police officer for seven years.

The sergeant will serve as interim chief in his absence.
