CATER COUNTY, Okla. (KXII) - The Carter County Sheriff's Office says someone is posing as the sheriff's captain over the phone and requesting people pay money because they missed jury duty.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant says the caller is requesting people to purchase a money card while they stay on the phone with them and then ask for the card number.

Bryant says the caller threatens a warrant will be issued if they do not pay.

He says the number is a 5-8-0 area code but it's been traced back to Chicago.

Two people so far have lost a combined total of $2,000.

"If you receive a phone call from somebody saying they're from the carter county sheriff's office ask them what their badge number is, ask them if you can call them right back," said Bryant.

Bryant says to write down the number that calls you and report it to their office.
