"Cash Mob" slated for Thursday to help local businesses

ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) - The Ardmore Chamber of Commerce says local businesses on East Main St. need your help more than ever as construction continues.

This Thursday at 4 p.m. they're organizing a Cash Mob to meet in the Mill Street parking lot.

"It's a group of people that get together to support a business or businesses and in turn that supports our community," Coordinator of Membership Development Janee Auten said.

Chamber member Janee Auten says they're partnering up with the Ardmore Young Professionals for the shopping event that will take place on the 14th and the 21st.

"We want people to get excited about our community and shop local," AYP's Program Manager Casey Huff said.

Construction crews have been working on East Main from Washington to A St. for a year.

The project includes widening the sidewalks, resurfacing the road and adding in a landscaped median to divide the new two-way street.

Stephanie Choate owns The Ardmore Emporium.

She says because of the construction she's lost a few vendors and her sales are down about 50% from last year.

"Most of them have stayed so we are family and we are sticking together and we are seeing this through and it's going to be great when it's finished," Choate said.

The cash mob is not only an event for businesses to make money but for the town as well; Auten says for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 stays in the community.

"It's very sweet of them to concentrate on the ones of us who this has impacted," Choate said.

Auten says Thursday's Cash Mob will shop at the stores on the North side which include The Party Fish, The Stag and Choate's store.

She says each of the stores will offer a drawing for a $100 gift certificate and Ten Star Pizza will have carry out specials.

City officials say they are expecting the streetscape project to be complete within the next month.
