RENO, Texas (KXII) -- Citizens in the Reno area now have a new safe exchange zone.

It's located at the north side of City Hall and the police department parking lot.

The area is designed for people who need a safe spot to handle child custody exchanges or for anyone wanting to exchange money for purchases made online.

The area is under 24/7 video surveillance and includes two parking spots marked in yellow.

Reno Police Chief Matt Birch says they hope the zone will give families the peace and safety as if an officer were there.

"It's a big resource saver and convenience for us. It's also a convenience for the city and the citizens. It gives them a safe place to come and they can come do their exchange, whether its property or child custody related and not worry about a whole lot," Birch said.

Birch says on any given week his officers would be called out twice a week to stand by on child custody exchanges. Now, they don't have to with this new safe zone.
