Community addresses Tishomingo School Board, calls for change
"We need a school board, team and a new administrator and just old fashioned morals come back," parent Rita Taylor said.
Tishomingo residents addressed the school board Thursday night and some say they aren't satisfied with the way the school has been represented recently.
"Public perception of Tishomingo public school system is at an all time low," Jayson Northcutt said.
In September of 2016, Tishomingo Superintendent Kevin Duncan's wife, and former Tishomingo cheer coach and Alternative Education instructor Shelley Duncan, was arrested for having an inappropriate relationship with a 14 year old.
Her teaching license was revoked but she's still listed an employee on the school's website.
A former teacher addressed the board because she says there hasn't been a certified Alternative Education instructor since September 2016.
"This year they've gotten less, less than a certified teacher, less time in the classroom, less expectations, less attention," Vicki Harbert said.
And just last month the school got national attention when two basketball coaches were fired for using a school bus to go on a beer run.
"The blow from the coaches it was just embarrassing for the whole community," Taylor said.
And while most parents say they're ready for a change, some say Duncan shouldn't have to resign.
"He can't take blame of what somebody else has done," Karen Carroll said.
But the community members agree, something needs to change.
"Face what's going on and let people know what the resolutions are," Northcutt said.
The next school board meeting is on August 10
