SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) - The Pecan Grove Athletic Fields have been in the works for almost two years now.
On Monday night, the city approved construction for the 26 acre complex.
The city said they are in need of more athletic fields.
Over the past two years, they've been preparing the space off F.M. 1417 by building Canyon Creek Road to connect to the fields.
The first phase of the project will feature baseball and softball fields, concession stands, six soccer fields and a multi-use field along with parking for 400 people. It'll cost about $4 million.
The $2.2 million dollar second phase hasn't been funded yet, but it will feature lighted basketball courts, a walking trail, and a splash pad.
"We know the city is growing more quickly than it has in decades, so to have these type of projects not only conceptualized but funded all over the city really is incredible," said city spokesperson Nate Strauch. "It's an exciting time to be in Sherman."
The city hopes to break ground on the athletic complex in the next few weeks and hope to have the first phase of the project complete in early 2020.
