DURANT, Okla. (KXII) - A Durant city council candidate failed in his attempt to get his opponent off the ballot.

A representative from the Bryan County Election Board says John Cathey filed a contest of candidacy against Mike Morris, alleging Morris had not been a resident in Ward four long enough before filing his candidacy.

City Council candidates have to be a registered voter in their ward for six months before they are eligible to run for election.

Morris says he has lived in Ward four for 11 months.

The contest was heard by the Bryan County Election board Wednesday morning. They decided Morris would remain on the ballot.

Voting for Durant City Council is scheduled for April second.
