DENISON, Tex. (KXII) -- Last year, during a banquet for the Boys and Girls Club of America, members of the Denison Boys and Girls Club found out they won a special award.
"When we found out in late September at the banquet, I was almost in tears to know that we've won a huge award for Boys and Girls Club of America and it was great thing for our staff," Denison Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Ron Nixon said. "They were all excited about it."
The Gateway to Impact Gold Award is given to a Boys and Girls Club in each region that shows improved daily average attendance and improved facilities for their kids.
They beat out over 160 Boys and Girls Club in the southwest region.
It's a great feeling for the members of the club to walk away with the award for the first time.
"It's a wonderful award for our staff, our foundations, for United Way, and for everyone that's been apart to help our Boys and Girls Club and get to where we are now," Nixon said. "I think winning the Gateway to Impact Award and the Gold Award says a lot about our community support right now, our foundation support, and our support from the United Way. Parents and families of the community know we're trying to do the right things for our kids."
The club is grateful for the communities' support, but there is still work that needs to be done.
"I would tell them all thank for helping us get to this point and we have a lot going forward cause it's a never ending process to try to make our kids better for our future and the kids themselves to have important impacts on the community," Nixon said.
The Boys and Girls Club is currently preparing for their basketball program to begin for the upcoming weeks.
