DENSION, Tex. (KXII) - Saturday afternoon a decorated Navy veteran was honored as a hometown hero in Denison.

Roy David McDonald served in Vietnam and is a two time Purple Heart recipient.

While in Vietnam, McDonald said he had the honor of serving as a tunnel rat, who searched underground and destroyed missions during the war.

In his 22 years in the Navy, he was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal, three combat action ribbons, and two presidential citations among many distinctions.

He was awarded a plaque for being the November Hometown Hero, but McDonald would say otherwise.

"I'm not a hero, the heroes are the ones that didn't make it. I'm just very fortunate and blessed," he said.

Organizers said they started honoring local veterans as hometown heroes earlier this year and plan to continue naming a veteran every month.
