DURANT, Okla. (KXII) - It happened Thursday night, just after 6 pm. Police said Samuel Caldwell, was trying to cross the northbound lane of highway 69/75, when he was hit by an oncoming car.
"It was startling, I mean there's no question, whenever you see any traffic build up it's instinct to try and look and see what's going on." said Mike Delloro. Mike Delloro works across the street at Vision bank. He was heading home when he saw the traffic start to build up. He said he was driving on the University overpass when he saw flashing lights.
"It's rare that someone would want to cross the highway at that particular point" Delloro said.
Detective Drew Hale with Durant PD said the case is still under investigation. A local homeless advocate said Caldwell was homeless, and lived in a nearby camp. He said Caldlwell was crossing the highway to look for food in a dumpster, when he was hit. The driver of the car pulled over after hitting Caldwell, and called 9-1-1. Hale said the driver was not charged.
