DURANT, Okla. (KXII)- Homer Lewis served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. As a member of the radar crew, he helped land planes on Attu Island in the Pacific during World War II.
Lewis earned five medals and ribbons for his service during the war.
Lewis' granddaughter Rita Thomas, who lives in Durant, wants to surprise her grandfather on his big day February 28.
Thomas wasn't able to make it to Lewis' home in Stockton, California last year for his birthday, but wanted to make it up to him this year.
This year for his 100th birthday, Thomas says her family's goal is to have as many people as they can send birthday cards to their grandfather.
"I don't know how many is going to be there, I hope there is going to be boxes of them. We can just lay them out on the table and say happy birthday," said Thomas.
Thomas said she wants her grandfather to know that people are thankful for his service.
"It could be a friend of a friend of a friend, this is going to be something amazing. He's going to understand that he is an amazing man, and people are going to look at him and say 'wow, you're a 100, sir," said Thomas.
