TISHOMINGO, Okla. (KXII) -- An elderly Tishomingo woman hit by a car in front of the Post Office on Wednesday has died.

I'm really saddened to learn of her death," Carol Smither said.

Smither says she worked with Latrelle Chapman, 79, for more than a decade at the Murray State College Library in the 1980s.

"We were not only coworkers but really good friends," Smither said.

Smither says, that makes it even harder to accept her friend is gone.

Chapman was hit by a pickup truck on Tuesday morning in the Tishomingo Post Office parking lot.

She was taken to a Plano hospital but didn't survive her injuries.

"She would do anything for anybody she would help you any way she could," Smither said, "she was just a remarkable person."

Police say right now it appears to have been a tragic accident.

Chapman's family sent us this statement:

"This tragedy is heartbreaking for our family and many people in the community. The only comfort we can find in this is we know our mom is back with our dad. They were married for 60 years before his death late last year, and now they are together again. Our mom was one of the most amazing women to walk this earth. She was a living, breathing example of what a Godly woman should be. She loved unconditionally, without judgment and gave unselfishly to her family, community and church. She will be missed more than words can express."

Said Smither: "I'll remember how much I enjoyed being around her, and how much she helped people, and how friendly she was."
