Fannin County man sentenced to 5 years in prison for shooting wife

Michael Piland was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of assault with a deadly weapon.

BONHAM, Tex. (KXII) -- A Fannin County man convicted of shooting his wife in the head was sentenced Monday to 5 years in prison.

Michael Piland was found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for shooting his wife in 2016.

Officers said Piland shot his wife at their Dodd City home, and then called 911.

Fannin County deputies said Piland's wife survived, but she will never fully recover.

Piland's defense team claimed the shooting was an accident.
