'Fixer Upper' effect: Texoma house flipping sees huge increase

DENISON, Tex. (KXII) - A Texoma couple is transforming neighborhoods across Denison-- flipping old homes to bring them back to their former glory.

"It's kinda what I always wanted to be able to do this as a full time job," said Justin Briscoe.

Justin and Ashley Briscoe find beauty in the unconventional.

"The biggest thing they say on 'Fixer Upper' is, the ugliest house in the neighborhood, is usually the one we get," Ashley said.

Texoma's own Chip and Joanna Gaines: These two Texoma house flippers own Briscoe Homes. They buy up old homes in Denison, give them a makeover, and put them back on the market.

"We started with just buying dilapidated older homes in lots and things like that," Justin said. "And have just kinda grown since then."

Like a Denison home on Texas Street. Once condemned, now under contract to be sold after less than two days on the market.

"We maintained the old chimney, the brick the old characteristics," Justin said. "If it's an older home, we want to accentuate some of the older characteristics."

A study from Attom Data shows home flipping is up 70 percent since 2016 in Sherman/ Denison.

With more growth also comes higher prices.

"It's huge, it goes both ways," Ashley said. "Because if the market's going up, that's raising prices for us, but it's also allowing our homes to sell quickly."

But they wouldn't trade the transformations for anything.

"We take old houses and have a vision a lot of people can't see, so we like to implement that," Justin said.
